BETWEEN LAND AND SEA
Hand dyed indigo cotton, wax, embroidery, weather conditions. 5x8 feet. 2017.
A thematic extension of Betsy Ross got the Blues through the use of indigo, this flag more specifically investigates the purpose and origin of the nation state and the implications for its constituents.
The text is an excerpt from the following poem, part of the collection Composition:
The flag was flown at the Knockdown Center in Queens, NY from June 29th to July 13th as part of Philip von Zweck's project Temporary Allegiance. The project provides a platform for artists and spectators to reconsider the flag as a symbol of belonging, loyalty, and identity. Temporary Allegiance is an ongoing open call. Details can be found here at the Knockdown Center's website.
Special thanks to Fu Fang & the Knockdown Center for documenting the work in my stead!
